Decadal prediction skill in a multi-model ensemble

چکیده

Decadal climate predictions may have skill due to predictable components in boundary conditions (mainly greenhouse gas concentrations but also tropospheric and stratospheric aerosol distributions) and initial conditions (mainly the ocean state). We investigate the skill of temperature and precipitation hindcasts from a multi-model ensemble of four climate forecast systems based on coupled ocean-atmosphere models. Regional variations in G. Evaluation of short-term climate change prediction in multi-model CMIP5 decadal hindcasts

[1] This study assesses the CMIP5 decadal hindcast/ forecast simulations of seven state-of-the-art oceanatmosphere coupled models. Each decadal prediction consists of simulations over a 10 year period each of which are initialized every five years from climate states of 1960/1961 to 2005/2006. Most of the models overestimate trends, whereby the models predict less warming or even cooling in the...

Decadal climate prediction (project GCEP).

Decadal prediction uses climate models forced by changing greenhouse gases, as in the International Panel for Climate Change, but unlike longer range predictions they also require initialization with observations of the current climate. In particular, the upper-ocean heat content and circulation have a critical influence. Decadal prediction is still in its infancy and there is an urgent need to...

Decadal Variability in ENSO Predictability and Prediction

A simple coupled model is used to examine decadal variations in El Niño–Southern Oscillation (ENSO) prediction skill and predictability. Without any external forcing, the coupled model produces regular ENSO-like variability with a 5-yr period. Superimposed on the 5-yr oscillation is a relatively weak decadal amplitude modulation with a 20-yr period. External uncoupled atmospheric ‘‘weather nois...

Long‐lead ENSO predictability from CMIP5 decadal hindcasts

The limits for the predictability of the El Niño–Southern Oscillation (ENSO) have been long discussed. Even when ENSO prediction skill is expected to be limited, questions remain as to which are the controlling factors. The role of atmospheric noise for ENSO initiation, the growth of initial errors and inadequate models have been identified as key elements (e.g., Chen et al. 2004; Chen and Cane...

Effects of the Mount Pinatubo eruption on decadal climate prediction skill of Pacific sea surface temperatures

Multi-model simulations show a post-Pinatubo eruption sequence of Pacific sea surface temperatures (SSTs) that includes a La Niña-like pattern the third northern winter after an eruption, opposite in sign to what was observed after Pinatubo. This leads to the loss of hindcast skill for years in the 1990s affected by the Pinatubo eruption because the post-eruption internal variability of the cli...
